Ride the Wave

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

After our recent coverage in the San Jose Mercury news and eWeek , earlier this week in conjunction with the Google rollout of their private beta testers for the new Google Wave platform, it’s apparent that collaboration is no longer just a trend but is rather being adapted by the big players of the industry, Google and others alike.

CEO & Founder Rony Zarom was quoted in the Mercury News: “Real-time collaboration on the Web “is a natural evolution” for how people use the Internet. “It started as e-mail being the major platform for communication, moved on to instant messaging, and you can see social networking taking those broad approaches as the major communication platform. I think the next trend is basically collaboration,” Zarom said. “I think more and more companies see that as the next trend on the Internet.”

Over the past few months we’ve seen various social media companies trying forge partnerships to offer more collaborative environments and features to their services. Examples of such included the introduction of live chat box on Facebook, and since Ustream & Hulu have introduced live chatting functionalities merged with the facebook-twitter platforms.

The recent NY Video Meet-up (@NYV2 ) that took place at NYU’s Tishman Hall on Sept. 30th, featuring CEO & Founder of Brightcove: Jeremy Allaire gave an overview of what Allaire described as video online integration becoming an industry standard and how he has seen online video evolve since pioneering the development of the Flash platform when he was CTO at Macromedia. The presentation discussed in what directions web video development is heading, what are foreseeable hurdles, how mobile platforms will play a role amongst other things and the event was of course live streamed- would you expect anything else at a NY Tech Video Meet-up?

Questions raised during the Q&A touched upon the issues of the future development of the flash platform (upon which Watchitoo is based), media interactivity and collaboration, the video application in various industries especially in publishing, advertising, and music business. Watch the Allaire Interview on Livestream.

What will be the included in the realm of interactivity: communication & collaboration? As video consumption on personal broadcasting sites like Youtube or major network websites such as CBS, NBC syndicating TV programming with pre-rolled ads, increases exponentially, consumer behavior is quickly shifting. We are no longer just consumers, we are frequently producers and the market clearly demands it- overly apparent by the rapid growth of real-time twitter journalism in the past few months.

Watchitoo already provides instant messaging, video chats, live streaming, video consumption and social networking all in one platform but there’s room for many additional functions. What more can be added one might ask?  The truth is many things, especially in a synchronized web environment. Allusions to the Wave have referenced abilities to do document sharing, group editing and provide eventual conferencing solutions, when there’s a collaborative service the options are endless.

The Next Era of Content Sharing: Real-time Social Collaboration Trend

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

The prevalence of text messages, RSS feeds, status updates and tweets underscore the desire people have to connect with the greater global community in real time.  News, information and entertainment are spreading across the internet 24-hours a day and everyone is attempting to digest that information, while maintaining a social connection with the people around them.  In the meantime, companies are falling over themselves trying to provide the forum to view content and interact with that greater community.

Watchitoo Obama inauguration

Recent events, including Obama’s inauguration, the Iranian protests following their recent election, and the startling death of Michael Jackson have demonstrated internet users want real-time access and live video streams so they can view this content and engage around it with their peers. Recent trending topics on Twitter including the #iranelection and #michaeljackson’s shocking death reveal staggering statistics at just how many users are participating in this real-time social collaboration phenomenon. NewTeeVee stream statistics from the November 4th election day, reveal that CNN had more than 25 million streams in the 12 hours surrounding the Obama inauguration, with 1.3 million concurrent live streams just before Obama’s address.  The live stream coverage of Michael Jackson’s memorial service generated  81 million page views, 11.8 million unique visitors and 9.7 million live video streams, according to CNN.com.

Furthermore, Ustream is at the forefront of the live streaming phenomenon, attracting hundreds of thousands of users to its website for various kind of live streams, ranging from personal events to political coverage, including Obama’s recent speeches at the G8 summit, once again demonstrating that there is a powerful demand for real-time broadcasting. Along with other live stream services, it  continues to push the concept that the future of TV is web TV.

In the past few months, a new wave of real-time synchronization has swept the web, enabling users  to share content without having to download or upload files, without having to contend with skipping or buffering and paving the way for a quick, easy and seamless online experience.  The first site to enter the space was Watchitoo, when it launched into beta earlier this spring, which was quickly followed by announcements of similar offerings, from  Google Wave, Skype Screensharing, Opera Unite, Facebook’s Live Stream Box, and Microsoft Office 2010.  However most companies dealing with real-time technologies, social networking, and content sharing, do not integrate everything into one multifunctional platform. Other sites don’t offer collaboration that is on the same level because users cannot share the synchronized content and maintain the social networking component simultaneously.

Watchitoo is the first, real-time collaboration platform (patent-pending technology) that goes a step beyond many content-sharing and live video-streaming sites. Watchitoo is the closest thing to actually sitting next to a friend while viewing content online.  It fuses together all the popular platforms available on the web by merging content sites, social networks and instant messaging.  By creating a portal that allows users to draw from content sharing sites, upload their own content, and view it simultaneously, Watchitoo builds a social network around the content and enables users to engage in real time conversation with other users.  Watchitoo provides the natural evolution of social media and the next era of content sharing by taking the most popular uses of the internet and combining them. This allows for a real time social collaboration between parties, ultimately marrying the experience of sharing content and being together by doing it all online.

Ride the Real-Time Trend Wave and Watchitoo!

Welcome to Watchitoo!

Monday, July 20th, 2009

As I have traveled abroad on business trips over the years, staying connected to my family has always been of the utmost importance. In addition to phone calls and emails, I have strived to find a way to share my experiences via photos and videos with my wife and children, but I found just sending a link to my photos in an online photo album and hoping that they would enjoy them was not fulfilling. As a Type-A person, I was looking for immediate gratification. I wasn’t willing to wait for them to send an email back encapsulating their emotions. I wanted to see them smiling at all those funny pictures I took, and I wanted to laugh with them. I wanted to be as close to them as I possibly could by narrowing the gap of physical distance.

I often thought it would be wonderful if I could upload my photos and videos, and share them with my family while watching them through video conferencing. I also wanted them to be able to upload their content and share it with me. Finally, it dawned on me that the lack of rich media sharing solutions fostering real-time connections while viewing content created a unique business opportunity.

In January 2007, I founded Watchitoo, to redefine the boundaries of content sharing and social networking. For the first time it enables users to share content in a collaborative and synchronized web environment, while seeing each other using video streaming, as well as communicating via instant-messaging. Watchitoo’s patent-pending technology differentiates itself from the other screen-sharing collaboration solutions by providing better performance, better quality, and ease of use. In addition, Watchitoo offers a real time social networking environment, which combined with real-time collaboration, creates the first and only real-time social collaboration platform.

I hope that by creating a technology that meets my own needs for connecting with my family in a real way when I have to travel with such regularity, I am simultaneously meeting the needs of so many other people. There are many individuals in similar situations, who find themselves separated from family and friends, wanting to share and connect. I really hope you will enjoy the experience of using Watchitoo and be part of the new trend that is now forming – “Real-time social collaboration.”

If my family and friends can watch “it” together, then yours can Watchitoo!
