Watchitoo unveils new device to make Internet video ready for prime time

Watchitoo today introduced a new device that enables broadcast studios to upgrade Web video quality and pipe the improved video streams to TV.

The Watchitoo Channel Encoder 1000 (WCE-1000) is a server/hardware combination that can turn a Web video stream into an HDTV-quality product by treating it like an in-studio camera feed. For the first time, producers have the granular control they need over frame rate, pixel resolution and audio quality.

This capability is especially powerful in combination with the Watchitoo interactive streaming platform, which enables up to 25 people to join a group video chat via their webcams. Producers can now handle each participant – as well as any content under discussion – as a separate composite video feed. Or they can take all the feeds.

The WCE-1000 has major implications for organizations using Internet content for TV or Web TV. It enables them to:

  • Provide true HDTV video and audio quality from Internet video streams;
  • Pick individual participants from a group videochat and present them to viewers however they wish;
  • Separate video from audio for quality engineering;
  • Silence redundant audio; and
  • Easily send the output to the Web, TV or both.

“Viewers demand high-definition-quality media on the TV and Internet,” said Watchitoo CEO Rony Zarom. “With the WCE-1000, they will no longer suffer through the low-quality Web video feeds they’ve seen on television and streaming sites. Higher-quality video, and more control over how it’s presented to the viewer, will tremendously benefit social TV on the Web, cable and the broadcast networks. The result will be driving more viewers to great content. The boundaries between the Internet and the television are blurring, and we’re helping drive that revolution.”

How it works

The WCE allows producers to connect and screen remote virtual participants through the Watchitoo platform control room. The technical producer can control the remote participants’ source stream, using the WCE-1000 control panel to set frame rate and bandwidth to obtain the best possible feed. The server’s administration/configuration screens enable the producer to set resolution and frames-per-second (FPS) output.

The multi-stream feeds are then pushed through the Watchitoo content delivery network, outputted to the WCE-1000, and encoded through Watchitoo hardware that feeds into a network studio switcher (via HDMI – HD/SDI). Studio producers can then switch and broadcast the Watchitoo feeds to television and/or Web as desired.

The WCE-1000 is a turnkey solution that includes a server, customization and training. It is available now. For more information, contact +1 (212) 354-5888 or sales@watchitoo.com.

Watchitoo extends global reach with new UK data center

Building on a string of high-profile customer wins and key strategic partnerships, Watchitoo is expanding its global presence beginning with a new data center and distribution channel in the UK .

Watchitoo uniquely combines videochat, HD streaming and collaboration software on a SaaS platform for education, entertainment and business customers in the United States and, increasingly, throughout the world.

The company today announced it has opened a data center in London to ensure high-bandwidth audiovisual quality and reliability backed by premier service and support. To deliver the assured service, Watchitoo has tapped Cogent Communications, a world-class ISP and the second-largest peered network in the world. Its 21,300 customers account for nearly one-fifth of the traffic on the Internet.

Watchitoo also announced an international distribution agreement with Imago Group plc, a $77 million video communications distributor on the outskirts of London. Imago will sell Watchitoo subscriptions to businesses through its network of resellers in Europe and South Africa.

“We’re thrilled that we have secured so much traction in the United States, and now we hear the rest of the world knocking,” said Watchitoo CEO Rony Zarom. “It’s time to branch out, and we’re doing it the right way with a data center that ensures our overseas customers will be as pleased with the Watchitoo experience as our American customers. Our distribution partnership with Imago will ensure that we sustain the momentum and grow at a healthy clip, opening other markets in due time.”

A wide range of organizations have been using Watchitoo to engage their audiences. The National Basketball Association hosted a live town hall with stars Amar’e Stoudemire, Kevin Durant, and Stephon Curry. Companies like VH1 and Animal Planet use Watchitoo for close online encounters with stars. Watchitoo has partnered with Pearson Education to embed Watchitoo in the Pearson LearningStudio for select institutions seeking a dynamic virtual classroom. Large businesses are using Watchitoo for training, sales and customer service.

Global school assembly with Alan Alda powered by Watchitoo

Alan Alda explains the Flame Challenge to 11 Schools - Powered by Watchitoo

Fifth-graders around the world seek clear answer to basic scientific question

NEW YORK, May 17, 2012 – “What is a flame?” asked 11-year-old Alan Alda.
“Oxidation,” his teacher answered. Period.
That answer smoldered in Alda’s brain for decades even as he immortalized himself as Hawkeye Pierce on the Korean War-era comedy M*A*S*H. He recounted the story last week to hundreds of fifth-graders from 10 schools around the world in an interactive, videoconference conducted on the Watchitoo HD videoconferencing, live streaming and collaboration platform.

The World Wide Assembly brought Alda together with students participating as judges in the Flame Challenge, a competition directly inspired by Alda’s frustration with the teacher’s answer six decades ago. Sponsored by the Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, the challenge asks scientists to answer the what-is-a-flame? question “in a way that an 11-year-old would find intelligible and maybe even fun.”

(View recording of the assembly: http://www.centerforcommunicatingscience.org/?page_id=1233)

Students in the Watchitoo videoconference discussed the challenge entries and the principles behind the competition. Each class appeared on the screen with Alda, at one point alongside a streaming contest entry. Meanwhile, viewers from around the world typed questions and comments and automatically posted the link to the assembly to their social networks through the Watchitoo platform.

“It was awe-inspiring to connect with hundreds of fifth-graders around the globe who are deeply curious about a scientific question,” said  Valeri Lantz-Gefroh, a journalism lecturer at the Stony Brook University School of Journalism and the organizer of the challenge. “Watchitoo brought everyone together, consolidated the conversation, spread the word and made the occasion momentous. Students took their work seriously and they were clearly more energized than they would have been in a typical classroom setting.”

Watchitoo enables up to 25 individuals or groups to join an interactive online HD video conference and hundreds of thousands to follow the conversation. Unlike other conferencing and streaming software, Watchitoo can be embedded in a customer’s website, blog or Facebook page and customized with their own branding.

More importantly, Watchitoo has given Alda and Stony Brook University a way to take that simple question – the one his teacher  could have answered better – around the world. And is that question getting answered. Approximately 6,000 student judges at 191 schools sifted through 535 entries screened by credentialed scientists for accuracy. The best answer will be revealed June 2 in New York during the World Science Festival.

“It’s inspiring to see how students respond when you bring them face to face with new people, communities, content and ways of interacting,” said Watchitoo CEO Rony Zarom. “The world is now their classroom, and their opportunities are expanding exponentially. If only Alan’s teacher could see what he or she started.” For more information visit us at www.Watchitoo.com

Watchitoo Powers Animal Planet’s Interactive Live After-Show of Whale Wars: Viking Shores

Leading Video Streaming Company Watchitoo Selected by Animal Planet to Broadcast Discussion About Whaling in the Faroe Islands

New York, NY – April 26, 2012Watchitoo (www.watchitoo.com),  has been selected by Animal Planet to power its after-show discussion for the new mini-series Whale Wars: Viking Shores.  The discussion will be between Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conversation Society and Heri Joensen, Faroese native and lead singer of the international band Týr.

WHALE WARS: VIKING SHORES, a new five-part series, documents “Operation Ferocious Islands,” Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s whale defense campaign as they set sail to end the ancient tradition known as “The Grind” – Faroese for “whale drive” – that takes place every summer. For the first time in the history of the WHALE WARS saga, the Sea Shepherds are not only at sea but also deploying a covert team to patrol the streets, interact with locals and carry out undercover missions. Each one-hour episode follows the Sea Shepherd’s land-air-sea campaign led by Paul Watson as they try to find the whales before the locals do. A hunt can happen at any moment, and the Sea Shepherds are vastly outnumbered in a new kind of face-to-face battle.

For 30 years, Captain Paul Watson has been at the helm of the world’s most active marine protection nonprofit organization – Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Paul Watson’s career as a master mariner began in 1968 as a seaman with the Merchant Marines and with the Canadian Coast Guard. In 1972, Watson was a co-founder of the Greenpeace Foundation in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1977, Watson founded Sea Shepherd Conservation Society – dedicated to research, investigation and the enforcement of laws, treaties, resolutions and regulations established to protect marine wildlife and their habitats worldwide. Since then, Watson has traveled and lectured extensively at universities and events around the world, including Pasadena College of Design and UCLA. He has authored six books and has been the subject of numerous magazine articles and profiles including being chosen by Time Magazine as one of the environmental heroes of the 20th century in the year 2000.

Heri Joensen is a vocalist, songwriter and guitarist from the Faroe Islands. Since 1998, he has fronted the Viking metal band Týr, writing the greater part of all music and fuelling this band of Northern brothers with boundless energy. He was born in the Faroe capital Tórshavn in 1973 but grew up in a village consisting of only two houses with a spectacular view of saga-drenched islands. At the age of 14, Heri began playing guitar and at 17 started playing in local bands. Like so many talented Faroese, Heri moved to Denmark for further education. There he met up with former band mate Kári Streymoy and formed Týr. Since finishing his education and moving back to the Faroe Islands, his career as front man of Týr has taken great flight to international stardom. Heri writes nearly all the songs himself and draws heavily on Faroese tradition for both music and lyrics.

“Watchitoo enables us to extend the debate around whaling onto the web and beyond the show, letting the opposing sides air their opinions to this deeply debated topic,” said Iain Langridge, vice president of Animal Planet.com and Petfinder. “This is the first time WHALE WARS web fans will get a chance to hear directly from Paul Watson as well as the opposing views of the Faroese people represented by Heri Joensen.”

The live whaling discussion powered by Watchitoo will air on Animal Planet’s website (www.animalplanet.com) and Facebook page on May 4th at 10 PM (ET) just after the second episode of Whale Wars: Viking Shores.
